Whether you are beginning your journey with clay or seeking to elevate your existing skills, this course provides the tools, structure, and support needed to grow as a ceramic artist. Designed to replicate the rigor and structure of a college-level class, this course offers a balanced blend of demonstration, guided practice, and independent exploration.
Each session begins with a comprehensive demonstration by the instructor, covering essential pottery techniques and concepts. These demonstrations will include foundational wheel-throwing techniques, hand-building methods, and an introduction to the science behind clay and glazes. Following the demonstration, students will have ample time to practice these skills independently, with the instructor available for personalized guidance and feedback.
Throughout the course, students will:
Learn to navigate a pottery studio confidently, including tools, materials, and safety practices.
Develop core competencies in both wheel throwing and hand building, with an emphasis on technique and precision.
Gain a deeper understanding of clay bodies, glazing techniques, and firing processes.
While the focus is on skill acquisition and mastery, students can expect to complete 4-6 finished pieces by the end of the course. These pieces will showcase the techniques you learned and provide a tangible record of your progress.
Upon completing this course, students will qualify for membership at MUD. As a bonus, if you choose to sign up for a membership after your class, you’ll receive a complimentary 25 lbs bag of white stoneware clay to continue your creative journey.
Please note:
Our pottery wheels use a magnetic drive, which may pose a risk to individuals with a pacemaker. For your safety, it is mandatory to consult your physician before enrolling in a wheel throwing class if you have a pacemaker. The studio assumes no liability for any harm or injury that may occur as a result of participation.
There is an additional firing fee of $3 per pound for each piece a student wishes to glaze fire and take home, but no firing fee is applied to bisqued work.
In the event of adverse weather conditions, MUD Ceramics Studio will remain open for classes unless a Travel Advisory is issued recommending the suspension of non-essential travel.
