Welcome to Shapes & Surfaces: Hand Building Techniques, an 8-week course designed for beginners and those looking to refresh or grow their hand building skills. From your first touch of the slab roller creating tile wall hangings, to crafting your own plates, bowls, and jewelry, each class is a step toward growing your skills and deepening your understanding of the ceramic process.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore various aspects of hand building, including texturing, glazing, as well as decorating, and you’ll finish the course with a solid understanding of ceramic forms.

Because this course is focused on exploration and deepening of technical skill rather than producing a large volume of work, students should expect to take home 2-4 pieces by the end of the course. Students who have completed the course will qualify for membership at MUD, and receive a 25 lbs bag of clay (white stoneware) free when they sign up for any of our membership options.

Please note: Before attending your first class, we ask that you familiarize yourself with the MUD Ceramics Studio handbook and sign our liability waiver. The signed waiver can be returned either via email (office@mudceramics.org) or in person at the studio.

MUD Ceramics Studio does not offer glaze appointments after a class has finished. Ceramics naturally involve multiple stages (greenware, bisqueware, and glazed work) so it’s common to have pieces in various stages at the end of a class, and as a result students should expect to pick up both bisqueware and glazed pieces post-class. There is an additional firing fee of $3 per pound for each piece a student wishes to glaze fire and take home, but no firing fee is applied to bisqued work.

In the event of adverse weather conditions, MUD Ceramics Studio will remain open for classes unless a Travel Advisory is issued recommending the suspension of non-essential travel.
